Pitman Arms

Excess steering play that remains even after adjusting the steering box often traces back to the pitman arm. On many classic Chevy Camaros, Chevelles, and El Caminos, the connection loosens over time or the stud develops wear that allows subtle but noticeable movement in the linkage. The result is a steering wheel that feels disconnected from the front tires, especially at highway speeds.

Replacing a worn pitman arm restores a solid mechanical link between the steering box and center link. Proper spline engagement and a tight ball joint help eliminate slack that can affect tracking and steering precision. Pitman arms are commonly serviced alongside idler arms or other front-end components within the suspension, since steering stability depends on every connection in the linkage working together.
