Fix Clunking Noises by Replacing Your Ride's Steering Shaft
Steering Shafts
If the steering wheel feels loose, makes a clunk when turning, or has noticeable play before the tires respond, the steering shaft may be worn out and in need of replacement. On many classic Chevy Camaros, Chevelles, and El Caminos, factory rag joints crack and couplers loosen after decades of use. Even small amounts of movement in the shaft can turn into steering slack that’s easy to feel from the driver’s seat.
Replacing your ride's steering shaft restores a more direct mechanical connection between the steering column and steering box. Updated couplers and properly supported joints help reduce flex and eliminate excess movement under load. Steering shafts are commonly serviced alongside pitman arms or refreshed power steering components, since overall steering precision depends on every link in the system remaining tight and aligned.
